The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is floating its long-expected vehicle fuel economy rules for model year 2027 and later vehicles, touting a regulatory focus on internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles but also including a projection of significant electrification that manufacturers might pursue. Released July 28, NHTSA’s proposal floats new 2027-2031 fuel economy standards for passenger cars and light trucks -- along with a preliminary standard for MY32 for those vehicles.
