EPA Tags Another PFAS As ‘Likely Carcinogen,’ Driving Strict SDWA Limits

EPA has identified a second PFAS -- perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS) -- as a “likely carcinogen,” driving the agency to propose tough new drinking water standards for the substance, as well as for perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), which the agency had previously characterized as a “likely” carcinogen. The classifications -- due to potential kidney and liver cancer effects -- triggered the agency to automatically set the health-based concentration for the two substances -- known as a maximum contaminant level goal (MCLG)...
