Environmentalists are ramping up pressure on EPA to cut emissions of the industrial solvent ethylene oxide (EtO) after a jury awarded a Chicago-area plaintiff hundreds of millions of dollars in punitive damages for exposure to the solvent, which was released from a commercial sterilizer and is being blamed for causing cancer in Willowbrook, IL.
